Cinéma du réel 2007

The 29th Cinéma du Réel is presenting its international competition with 24 short, long or mid-length documentaries from 19 different countries and the French competition with 12 films, all as yet unscreened in France. And in addition, a retrospective (partnered by the film theatres Les Trois Luxembourg and MK2 Beaubourg), along with special screenings, including a Carte Blanche for the new Tangiers Cinematheque.

In the 2007 selection, in a variety of forms which range from the most fieverish shooting impulses to the most theatrical mise en scène, far from any kind of complacent know-how. You will see... nights, tales, dreams, scary stories, poems, humour and anger, silences and “big issues” (on our scale),

And many women who speak out, advancing, like the heroines of Rithy Panh and Jia Zhangke. We will see tourists (passing by), crushing institutions, the ruins of ancient worlds, the tawdriness of the new ones, the murderous machinery of management, and “democracies” unaffordable to those who are penniless.

A “geography lesson” which the documentary cinema sustains with a unique energy, because it restores our sight (and hearing), on paying attention to the invisible(s), on telling the stories of what has been put to one side, of what lies underneath.
